What is THC-A?

THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) is a cannabinoid that is found in the cannabis plant. It is the precursor to THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the psychoactive compound that is responsible for the “high” that is often associated with cannabis use.

THCA is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid, meaning it does not produce the intoxicating effects of THC. However, when exposed to heat, THCA is decarboxylated, meaning that a carboxyl group is removed from the molecule and then produces effects similar to THC. This process occurs naturally when cannabis is smoked or vaporized or when it is cooked into an edible form.

The cannabinoid THCA can comply with the Farm Bill because it’s not listed as a Controlled Substance. The 2018 Farm Bill legalized hemp and its derivatives, which includes THCA, as long as the final product contains no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC on a dry weight basis.
